Although I am an artist, I have been a curator throughout my career beginning with a portrait show in Washington DC of the new Mayor who was to bring sweeping change to the city. By the time I had selected the artists, gotten the Mayor to sit for us and hung the show, it became a pretty big deal. The Washington Post sent their top arts reporter to write an article about the show for the cover of the arts section. I walked the reporter through the show then waited to read the results. I was not prepared for the scathing review and the reporter's comments. Some of the art he liked, some he didn't, but it was the curator, me, he could not stand and was happy to let everyone know. While walking him through the show, apparently I had explained absolutely everything to him, every bit of minutia and meaning behind each and every brushstroke. From then on I realized a good curator lets the art speak for itself.
The 18 artworks in the benefit are a cross section of current contemporary art production. Most of the artists have work in the collections of New York and national museums and corporations. They are heavily collected and at the top of their game, sought for their unique contributions to art and culture. Displayed with statements by the artists about why they are participating in this benefit, the art and the benefit are not to be missed.
