Chris Pennock’s artwork consists of muted-palette paintings that explore both moments of quiet beauty and thought-provoking text. Pennock is a New York based artist and a graduate of the School of Visual Arts.

Pennock is a master of juxtaposition. He rounds up a disparate collection of paintings for Muster at Whitney ArtWorks and mixes a range of subjects into a visual cocktail based on abstraction and geometry that is equally literal and representational. Pennock prefers fragments of wisdom like, “I am the sum of my parts,” but presents them as complex geometric abstract paintings. The viewer is left to sort out this trickery of hierarchy and make out of it what he or she will. Pennock is reverential of Modern art but does things his own way by installing work on mural-laced walls and, as in the case of his 2008 exhibition at the Solo Gallery in Tel Aviv, he is prone to changing elements of an exhibition throughout the length of its life at a gallery. Pennock reapplies the opacity of modernism as a critique on the art world and as a stylish lends using a calculated palette of either objective grayscale, dull real life colors, or absolutely hallucinatory color.
