About HIV Law Project

MESSAGE FROM THE CHAIR

Happy New Year and welcome to HIV Law Project’s winter 2008 quarterly newsletter.

In 2006, with funding from Robin Hood Foundation, the board of directors and management staff undertook an ambitious strategic planning agenda, which we continued to implement in 2007.

Our successes are apparent – we handled 882 cases in 2007; experienced our most successful year for fundraising; greatly increased our public presence and ability to educate New York City and State decision makers on issues important to people living with HIV/AIDS; and held our second annual retreat for board of directors, young professional advisory board members, and staff.

All of this hard work is undertaken to serve our clients – low-income people living with HIV/AIDS who have no where else to turn and who desperately require the comprehensive services that we provide.

As a result of HIV Law Project’s intervention and the work of its amazing staff, our clients are able to stay in their homes, receive the benefits and services to which they are entitled, and acquire the necessary documentation to remain in the United States with their families, to work, and to improve their health and well-being.

Looking forward in 2008, we will continue to work toward filling the resource gap caused by cutbacks and restrictions in federal Ryan White funding.  We will continue to press for change and block unjust proposals and activities that threaten effective practices beneficial to people living with HIV/AIDS and the public at large, such as recent efforts to eliminate written informed consent for people testing for HIV.  We will continue as we have for 19 years to serve and fight for the rights and dignity of people living with HIV/AIDS in New York City.

I hope you enjoy this newsletter and that what you read invokes your desire to help change the world for the benefit of people living with HIV/AIDS.
