BOARD MEMBER POSITIONS

HIV Law Project is seeking individuals to join its Board of Directors.

General Board Member Responsibilities: Board members are volunteers and they are legally, fiscally, and morally responsible for the overall activities of the agency. Board members maintain and promote the agency’s mission to the public, private and public donors, and clients.

Skill Requirements:

  • Strong interest in and understanding of agency’s mission and goals;
  • Experience and/or knowledge in at least one area of board responsibility, such as accounting/financial management, fundraising, marketing/PR, law practice, legal services, HIV-related program services, etc.; and
  • Previous non-profit board experience preferred.

Position Expectations include:

  • Attending quarterly board meetings and monthly committee meetings;
  • Gifts of time, money, energy, expertise and commitment are expected from all board members;
  • Assisting in developing and/or implementing fundraising strategies;
  • Reviewing and setting policy as needed to guide or provide direction to programmatic, human resource, financial, and community activities of agency;
  • Increasing and enhancing board membership and participation; and
  • Initial term of service: two years. Members may be reelected.

VOLUNTEER LEGAL INTERNS

The HIV Law Project is seeking a volunteer law student intern to assist its legal team in providing comprehensive services to low-income people living with HIV/AIDS.  The HIV Law Project provides free legal services (including immigration, housing, public benefits, consumer, health care and family law) and ancillary social service support for HIV+ residents of the Bronx and Manhattan and homeless New Yorkers, initiates large-scale impact litigation, engages in public policy advocacy, and conducts grassroots advocacy trainings for HIV+ women.

Qualifications: Applicants must be second or third year law students at an accredited law school.   An interest and commitment to providing high quality legal services to people living with HIV/AIDS is also required.   Fluency in Spanish or French is highly desirable.

Job Description and Duties: Law student interns assist the legal staff in representing clients in all substantive areas. This internship offers a unique and invaluable opportunity to gain hands-on experience. Law student interns will work directly with clients, conducting initial client interview, participating in case acceptance and strategy decisions, and providing advice and/or brief services under the supervision of an attorney.

Number of Positions and Schedule: There are three (3) law student volunteer positions per cycle. The fall cycle runs from mid-September through late November/early December; the winter cycle runs from late January to April; and the summer cycle runs from June to early August. The fall and winter cycle require a ten hour per week commitment (Tuesdays or Wednesdays, and Thursday a.m. required) for a minimum of 10 weeks. The summer cycle requires a 35 hour per week commitment for a minimum of ten weeks.

Salary: These are upaid volunteer internship positions.

HIV Law Project was founded in 1989 in response to a growing need for innovative legal services and advocacy programs for underserved, low-income people living with HIV/AIDS, particularly women and their families; people of color; undocumented and recent immigrants; members of the LGBT community; and the homeless.

HIV Law Project was the first and, today, remains the only legal agency providing comprehensive services exclusively to low income people living with HIV/AIDS in New York City.

 

MISSION

HIV Law Project believes that all people deserve the same rights, including the right to live with dignity and respect, the right to be treated as equal members of society, and the right to have their basic human needs fulfilled. These fundamental rights are elusive for many people living with HIV/AIDS. Through innovative legal services and advocacy programs, HIV Law Project fights for the rights of the most underserved people living with HIV/AIDS.

HIV Law Project fights for the rights of people living with HIV/AIDS by providing free, direct legal, social support, and advocacy services in a comprehensive, interdisciplinary service delivery model that bridges service gaps and stabilizes some of New York City’s poorest, most underserved, and vulnerable residents.

HIV Law Project’s long history of working with low-income HIV-positive communities and proven legal expertise make it uniquely qualified to provide crucial legal services and advocacy programs for this disenfranchised community.
